Floaters

Eye obstructions can develop as we age, leading to a concern known as floaters. When too many of these floaters appear in your field of vision, they can become seriously annoying to deal with. At Paragon Eye Associates, we can provide vitrectomy referrals if you’re struggling with this particular problem. Schedule an evaluation at our Arlington or Mansfield office today.

What Are Floaters?

Eye floaters are spots in your vision. They appear in many shapes and sizes. For some, they may look like black or gray specks or strings. These obstructions tend to drift about when you move your eyes and appear to dart away when you try to look at them directly. The sudden appearance of these obstructions should be taken seriously as it can indicate an underlying issue.

The appearance of cobwebs is a concern commonly confused with floaters. However, this issue is caused by a retinal detachment. We can determine what your specific issue is during your consultation and refer you to a retinal specialist if necessary.

What Are Floaters Caused By?

Most eye floaters are caused by age-related changes in the eye. These changes occur as the jelly-like substance (vitreous) inside your eyes becomes more liquid. Microscopic fibers within the vitreous tend to clump and can cast tiny shadows, or floaters, on your retina. Certain factors put you at an increased risk of developing this condition:

  • Being over 50
  • Having nearsightedness
  • Having experienced eye trauma
  • Complications from cataract surgery
  • Struggling with diabetic retinopathy
  • Having eye inflammation

What Are the Treatment Options?

A vitrectomy is a specialized procedure that removes the vitreous gel from the center of your eye. Since floaters appear in this gel, having them removed can reduce them and improve your vision. This procedure is typically done during cataract surgery. If needed as a stand-alone operation, we can provide you with a referral.
