What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a common condition that affects older individuals. This condition occurs due to the thinning of the macula. It commonly happens in two forms, dry and wet. Dry macular degeneration can affect one or both eyes. If present in only one eye, the condition may often go overlooked as your good eye will compensate for the vision loss.

Over time, this illness may progress to neovascular or “wet” macular degeneration. When this happens, the blood vessels under your retina will grow and leak. The wet type can result in sudden vision changes and potentially serious vision loss.

What Causes Macular Degeneration?

The cause of this condition is not currently known. However, research has shown that macular degeneration is caused by a combination of hereditary and environmental factors. Moreover, certain traits put you at greater risk of developing this illness. These traits include:

  • Being over 50 years old
  • Having other unmanaged conditions such as high blood pressure
  • Being a smoker
  • Being overweight
  • Having a poor diet, especially one lacking in omega-3 fatty acids

What Are the Treatment Options?

At Paragon Eye Associates, we provide evaluations to determine if you struggle with this condition. If so, we can provide referrals to retina specialists that will give you the necessary care. Often, doctors may provide you with anti-angiogenic medication as part of your treatment. This medication works by blocking the formation of new blood vessels and leakage from the abnormal vessels within the eye that cause wet macular degeneration.

In addition to this treatment, doctors also offer treatment programs like low vision rehabilitation and surgical intervention options. When you arrive at one of our offices, we will provide you with a comprehensive eye evaluation and discuss the most beneficial treatment options for your particular needs.
