Myopia (Nearsightedness)

Myopia (Nearsightedness)

While hyperopia makes nearby objects hard to discern, myopia does the opposite. Those with this eye condition have a hard time seeing objects in the distance. This can be a hindrance as it can interfere with everyday tasks like driving. Moreover, nearsightedness can cause eye strain, leading to headaches. If this sounds familiar, our team at Paragon Eye Associates can help. We offer evaluations, LASIK eye surgery, and consultations for glasses and lenses right here in Texas.

What is Myopia?

Myopia is a condition typically present at birth. It is commonly referred to as “nearsightedness” and can make it difficult to see objects in the distance clearly. This condition runs in families and can get worse, especially during puberty.

In most cases, myopia peaks at age 20, but it’s not uncommon for older adults to develop this condition. Regular eye exams are essential for identifying the signs of this issue and getting proper treatment.

What Is Myopia Caused By?

Like hyperopia, myopia is caused by a refractive error in the eye. The eye features two parts that help us focus on what we’re seeing. These parts are called the cornea and the lens. Nearsightedness usually occurs when your eyeball is longer than normal, or your cornea is curved too steeply.

This abnormality causes light to be focused in front of your retina instead of precisely on your retina. This results in a blurry appearance for distant objects.

What Are the Treatment Options?

At Paragon Eye Associates, we offer LASIK eye surgery for several eyesight issues, including nearsightedness. We use the latest technology to ensure that you get the best outcome from this procedure. Aside from surgical intervention, we also offer consultations for glasses and contacts. Get in touch to explore our options and find the best one for you.
