How Does a Chalazion Form?
A chalazion forms when something blocks an oil gland on your eyelid. Ordinarily, these oil glands keep your eyes moist. When blocked, they retain oil and swell, eventually forming a hard lump. Infections are a common cause of these lumps, as are certain diseases like Tuberculosis.
What Are the Symptoms?
Unlike styes, chalazia are not painful. However, they can be irritating and can often cause your eyes to water. Additionally, chalazia can impact your vision when they grow large. As a chalazion grows, it can push against your eyeball, causing vision blur and discomfort.
What Can Be Done For a Chalazion?
Typically, chalazia tend to go away on their own within a month or less. It is important not to attempt to pop one of these growths as that can cause infection or injure your eye. Instead, you can try the following methods at home to address the issue:
- Apply a warm compress.
- Massage the area.
- Practice good hygiene.
When done consistently, all of these methods can help reduce the growth’s appearance.
What If the Chalazion Persists?
If the chalazion is persistent, we can provide medication at one of our Texas offices. First, a consultation will help us determine whether you or your child have a chalazion. From there, we will be able to prescribe the appropriate treatment(s).
