Glaucoma can be devastating if left untreated. This progressive disease is difficult to detect and can lead to blindness if left untreated. Here at Paragon Eye Associates, we don’t want that to happen. We provide evaluations for glaucoma and offer Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) at our Arlington surgical center. Schedule your appointment today to receive the care you deserve.
What is Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery?
Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery or “MIGS” is a state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgical procedure. This procedure uses microscopic instruments to facilitate small incision surgery. This treatment provides a safer option to reduce eye pressure than conventional surgery. It also offers a higher success rate and faster recovery time.
When is This Surgery Needed?
This surgery is recommended if a diagnosis of glaucoma is made. The purpose of this surgery is to improve fluid drainage out of the eye, which reduces elevated eye pressure that damages the optic nerve. In clinical trials, this procedure has been shown to achieve a significant decrease in eye pressure over periods up to 24 months, along with a decrease in prescription eye drop usage.
How is MIGS Performed?
There are several ways of performing a MIGS procedure. The surgery is minimally invasive and involves the surgeon making just one small incision. Once the incision is made, tissue debris that blocks fluid flow in the eye is suctioned out. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia. It just takes one suture, if any, to close the incision. The best part is that this treatment takes very little time to perform.
