What is Pterygium?
Commonly called “surfer’s eye,” a pterygium is a raised, wedge-shaped growth of the conjunctiva that extends onto the cornea (the outer layer of the eye). These growths typically remain small, but they have the potential to grow to an uncomfortable degree and even affect vision. Those with this issue often experience:
- Irritation
- Itch
- Redness and inflammation
- A sensation of having something in your eye
What Causes Pterygium?
A pterygium can form due to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, typically caused by the sun. Exposure to certain environmental elements, including pollen, sand, and smoke, can increase your chances of having these growths. Pterygiums can become worse due to chronic dryness and irritation.
What Are the Treatment Options?
Eye drops can be effective in addressing the irritation and dryness caused by pterygium growth. If the growth is too large and is causing vision problems, surgery may be a good option. Surgical removal is typically done in an operating room and may take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. If the growth is large, a supportive tissue called an amniotic membrane might be applied to promote healing of the area after removal.
