What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that cause vision loss and blindness by damaging the optic nerve in the back of your eye. Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of this disease. Symptoms can start so slowly that you may not notice them for a long time. The only definitive way to determine if you have this illness is to get a comprehensive eye exam.

What Is Glaucoma Caused By?

Scientists are unsure of what causes this disease. However, it appears that people with glaucoma have high eye pressure. Certain factors appear to put you at a higher risk of developing this illness as well. These factors include:

  • Being over 60
  • Being Hispanic/Latino or African American
  • Having a family history of glaucoma

What Are the Treatment Options?

At Paragon Eye Associates, we provide evaluations for Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery or “MIGS,” and perform it at our  Ambulatory Surgical Center. This procedure is a state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgery. MIGS uses microscopic instruments to create tiny incisions and address the issue without requiring more invasive procedures. This surgery allows us to reduce eye pressure and thus minimize the risk of serious complications from glaucoma. MIGS offers a higher success rate and faster recovery time than traditional surgery.

We also offer Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) procedures as well as eye drops and Durysta (an injectable medication). While this illness cannot be reversed, its progression can be slowed to minimize symptoms and improve your quality of life.
