What Are the Different Types of Eyeglasses?

Eyeglass frames come in a variety of shapes and sizes. But, when it comes to lenses, the choices are limited to four. Each of these lenses offers a different type of visual adjustment. When you arrive for your appointment, we will work with you to determine which of the following is best for your needs.

  • Single vision (monovision) – These glasses are the most common. They have the largest field of vision because they only correct vision at one specific distance. They are commonly prescribed for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
  • Bifocals – These lenses are prescribed for people with multiple vision problems. They feature two different lens sections to correct distance vision and near vision.
  • Trifocals – These lenses are similar to Bifocals, but they feature an additional section for aid with intermediate vision.
  • Progressives – These lenses provide the same correction for near, intermediate, and distance vision. They do this without sectional lines, making them more comfortable for most people.

Why Are Consultations for Glasses Needed?

Consultations for glasses are essential because they help provide you with an accurate assessment of your vision. While there are over-the-counter glasses available, these pale in comparison to having a pair of glasses specifically made for your needs. During your consultation, we will perform a vision exam, offer lens options, and can even recommend frame styles.

When to Choose Glasses Over Contacts

While contacts can be comfortable for some, there are a few advantages eyeglasses provide that you should consider. For one, glasses require very little cleaning and maintenance. Moreover, you don’t need to touch your eyes to wear them; this decreases your risk for eye infections. Glasses are also cheaper than contact lenses in the long run since they don’t need to be replaced as often.
